The  covid-19  and ongoing Anglophone conflict in Cameroon, has affected economic activities in the two English speaking regions, and has  caused  frequent lock downs, lay-offs by employers, increase in the prices of basic goods and services and as a result of this, there’s a high levels of unemployment, there’s no farming and there is a high rate of school dropouts by young girls in the rural areas. To mitigate the impact of covid-19 and conflicts the Duke’s foundation works in collaboration with schools to provide education grants and places special emphasis on girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In commemoration of the international Education day on the 24th January 2021 under the theme “Recover and Revitalize Education for the covid-19 generation”, The Duke’s foundation organized a scholarship handing ceremony to the best performing science students in the ordinary levels in some rural schools in Buea.

The overall objective was to promote academic excellence to deserving students during General Certificate of Education exams 2020 in the Ordinary levels. The ceremony aimed at:

  1. Provide education grants to help pay fees for young girls to stay in School and specifically to:
  • Award of recognition (tuition paid) to the best Academic (chemistry student)
  • Award of recognition (tuition paid) to the overall best student
  • Motivational awards (tuition Paid) to the best Bakweri Student.
2. Provide a special talk on STEM by the coordinator of Women in Science program at the Duke’s foundation Ms. Ivanna Mojoko Lisinge to encourage young girls to get into sciences. The Duke’s foundation intends to upscale this program by
  • Increasing the number of schools and grants to be given.
  • Increase the Special talk on STEM with more schools.
